Before Installing
1.
Prepare Outlook Express
o
Delete unneeded mail
o
Compact all folders from File, Folder
o
Check that Outlook Express is set to Leave a copy of messages on server:
Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Advanced, Delivery Check for 200 to 300 Mb of free space on drive C.
o
Back up Outlook Express mail and address book to another directory. Do not copy the Folders.dbx file.
o
Back up Address book (xxx.wab) to Address Book folder in D:\Outlook Express
2.
Go to ROM BIOS with the Del key on boot and print current settings
3.
Upgrade ROM BIOS
o
Go to eSupport to identify your BIOS ID string
o
Send information by e-mail and await phone call
o
Order replacement BIOS chip or flash BIOS upgrade.
o
Run program to clear battery BIOS settings
o
Shut down, replace BIOS chip
o
Restart and enter BIOS and check the settings
4.
Uninstall programs that will not work with Win2000 or that need upgrading
5.
Remove hardware that won't work

Uninstall Norton Antivirus
2.
Uninstall Freezip
3.
Uninstall Outlook 2000
4.
Uninstall incompatible software
5.
Control Panel, Power Options, Turn off monitor and hard disks Never
6.
Remove shortcuts from Startup folder
7.
Run Win2000 CD
8.
Remove software that is incompatible before continuing.
Clean install of Windows 2000 -- (Also see)
1.
If necessary, make a Win98 startup disk From the CD, run tools\mtsutil\fat32ebd\fat32ebd.exe from the CD
2.
Check that the boot floppy works and that you can access the CD-ROM drive
3.
Fdisk the hard drive. Create a primary of 3GB for Drive C and a secondary for the others drives.
4.
Create logical partitions in the secondary partition
5.
Reboot the computer
6.
Format drive C with the /s option.
7.
Format the other partitions. We use C for windows, D for data, E for other programs, F for cache, and G for backup
8.
Put hardware drivers (sound card, network card) needed by installer on drive E
9.
Restart the computer and enter the ROM BIOS with the Del key
10.
Change option to boot from CR-ROM first
11.
Exit, saving settings
12.
On restart, press Enter to boot from CD
13.
Win2000 is set up on C and files are copied
14.
When the computer reboots, press Del to enter ROM BIOS and set boot back to A:, C:, CD ROM
15.
Exit saving settings
16.
Leave Win2000 CD in the CD-ROM
17.
On reboot, Win2000 will start up and set location and language
18.
Enter 25-digit product key
19.
Set up Administrator account
After Installing Windows 2000
1.
Exit the Welcome screen, but you can go back later to register by typing the command welcome in Start menu, Run...
2.
Check monitor and video adapter settings and background
o
Make shortcut to Dxdiag.exe and run it to identify video adapter
o
Right-click desktop and pick Properties
o
Select unique background picture for Administrator
o
Click settings tab
o
Check monitor and video adapter names
o
If correct, adjust Colors and Screen area
o
OK
o
Go back to Display Properties, Settings tab
o
Pick Advanced button
o
Monitor tab, set refresh tab higher than 60 Hz

Install Intellipoint Ver 4 mouse driver
4.
Set up system sounds
o
Start menu, Settings, Control Panel, double-click Sounds
o
Asterisk=Toot, Critical Stop=Oh-oh, Default sound=Ding, Exclamation=Chord, Question=Kids, Start Windows=Windows Logon Sound, except Administrator=The Microsoft Sound
o
Windows Explorer, Start Navigation=Crick
o
If Default Beep is missing and there is no sound from volume-control icon in tray, see below
5.
Install drivers Win2000 doesn't have
o
Right-click My Computer, pick Properties
o
Pick Hardware tab, Device Manager
o
Look for exclamation points on yellow circles
o
Right click device and pick properties
o
Steer to the software
6.
Set up Ethernet connection
o
Start Menu, Settings
o
Network and Dialup Connections
o
Right-click Local Area connection, pick Properties to get the Connection dialog box
o
Click Show icon in taskbar when connected
o
Sharing tab, no check mark for Enable Internet Connection Sharing
o
Check mark on Client for Microsoft Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
o
Don't check File and Printer Sharing
o
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties button to get the Internet Protocol dialog box
o
Pick Use the following IP address:
o
Enter the IP address
o
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
o
Default gateway is IP address for first three parts xxx.xxx.xxx.254
o
Click Use the following DNS server addresses:
o
For Tech DNS servers use 129.138.4.216 and 129.138.250.10
o
Click Advanced button to get the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box
o
Check that IP and Gateway are correct
o
Click DNS tab and check that DNS server address is correct
o
For DNS suffix put nmt.edu
o
OK, OK
o
Check that X-Win32 works.
7.
Alternatively, install dial-up software (NM Tech)

Install Norton Antivirus
9.
Right-click taskbar and pick Properties
o
Put check mark for Show small icons in Start menu
o
Uncheck Use Personalized Menus for showing all menu items
o
Advanced tab -- put check mark for Display Logoff
o
Advanced tab -- put check mark for Display Administrative Tools (Administrator)
o
OK
10.
Run C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dxdiag.exe to identify video and sound cards
11.
Set time for the display of list of operating systems (boot-manager time)
o
Right-click My Computer, pick Properties
o
Pick Advanced tab
o
Click Startup and Recovery
o
In Default operating systems pick "Microsoft Windows 2000"
o
Set Display list of operating systems for 2 seconds
o
Change Write debugging information to none
o
OK, OK
12.
Check for DMA setting of CD-ROM drives (unless you have an IDE controller card)
o
Right-click My Computer, pick Manage
o
In the left pane, pick System Tools, Device Manager
o
In the right pane, click the plus next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
o
If you have an IDE controller card skip the next step
o
Right-click Primary IDE Channel and pick Properties
o
Pick Advanced Settings tab
o
Set Transfer Mode to DMA if available
o
Repeat for the Secondary IDE Channel
13.
Set Event Viewer
o
Right-click My Computer, pick Manage
o
In left pane, pick the plus next to Event Viewer
o
Right-click Application and pick Properties
o
Set Overwrite events older that 7 days

Repeat for System
14.
Move virtual memory from drive C to drive D
o
Check Used space on drives C and D
o
Right-click Drive D and pick Properties

Pick Tools tab and click Check Now

Click Start
o
Click Defragment Now

Click drive D and then Analyze

Click Defragment

Close Defragmenter
o

Right-click My Computer, pick Properties

Highlight Drive D

Set initial size and maximum size to what they are for drive C (Windows uses twice RAM for initial and four times for maximum)

Drive C will now be larger by the former minimum virtual memory size

Defrag drive C
15.
Install Wntipcfg for information about IP configuration

Download WntIpcfg.exe
o
Double-click to install in C:\Program Files\Resource Kit

Make a shortcut to it

Make an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD)

Put a formatted floppy disk in drive A
o
Write Emergency Repair Disk and date on floppy label

Click Start Menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup

Click Emergency Repair Disk

Click a check mark in Also backup the registry ...

Click OK

For clean install, update to SP3, otherwise install SP2 first. Check for problems in Explorer, Search. When OK, update to SP3.

Install IE Web Accessories, ie5wa.exe (Version 5 is OK for Ver 6)

Backup drives C and E

Fix any problems caused by SP3

Run Regclean

Install Asian fonts MSGothic.ttc (sans serif) and MSMincho.ttc (serif) with Control Panel, Fonts
24.
Install Japanese language IME to write Romaji, Kana, and Kanji characters using a US keyboard
o
Log in as Administrator
o
Open Control Panel, Regional Options
o
Go to Language settings for the system
o
Scroll down to Japanese and click the box
o
Click Apply
o
Insert Windows 2000 CD and click OK so IME file I386\xjis.nl_ can be copied
o
Don't restart computer just yet
o
Click the Input Locales tab and pick Add
o
In the Add Input Locale dialog box, scroll to Japanese Input Locale and click OK, OK
o
Remove CD, restart computer and log in as any user
o
Open Control Panel, Keyboard
o
Click the Input Locales tab and pick Add
o
Scroll to Japanese and click, OK, OK
o
Restart computer
